The River 05:57
i was dreaming of a mountain in the sky above the flood and a forest and a city and a river made of blood baptist guy keeps getting closer tries to pull me down to the river have i been such a wayward daughter ? hold my head under the water take my hand now, we'll go walking on that mountain above the flood in the forest we'll make a canoe put it in the river of blood oh, then i started shouting i felt like i was drowning baptist, he keeps on plunging my hands, they keep on grabbing his hair, a tangled nest he smacks me across the chest "oh, what have i done then, father ?" "you've been a wayward daughter." left my mind on the riverbank left behind in the mud, it sank baptist guy, i gotta thank you for the bath, though i didn't want to i feel the harsh demands made by the baptists hands he bends me across his knee i'm backwards, i cannot see there's filth streaming out of me there's water rushing over me there's filth streaming out of me there's water rushing over me... when the river becomes an ocean every spirit of every man will rise up and we will recall that we are all but one blood again

Travel Light 02:58
when i was an astronaut, i didn't take my boots when i was a coal-miner, i didn't know the news when i ran a record store, i didn't have the blues i travel light and that's the life for me he doesn't care where else he goes he's not gonna take any extra clothes or extra shoes to hide his feet the ground is dirt, the dirt is sweet when i go to London-town i'll stand under a rock until i know all the time it takes to pack a clock then i'll flip it over, close the key, swallow the lock i travel light and that's the life for me he doesn't take his spoon or fork he's seen too many eating in New York he'll use his hands to pick and eat the fruit he finds, he'll find it sweet when i was a waitress, i gave away my tips when i was a call-girl, i gave away my hips* when i ran the kissing-booth, i gave away my lips i travel light and that's the life for me she lives a life like abandoned wind elemental wife, fortune is her friend a smile on a river made of light she's just a pebble on a waterfall tonight when i go to Boston, i'll stand around in jeans and save the cash to leave by selling black-market baked beans denim's what i like to wear, it has durable seams i travel light and that's the life for me she's just a genius without a thinking cap 'never pays the rent, she's funny like that i don't know what she's on, she's here and gone rides a welcome mat on a jungle cat furs and sofa chairs and shiny things are just a fuss we'll eat all the peanuts that we steal from the circus we'll count all the stars and go to sleep under the bus we'll travel light and that's the life for us we'll travel light and that's the life for us we'll travel light and that's the life for us we'll travel light and that's the life for us *i heard a little girl singing "Travel Light" and wanted to offer these alternate lyrics: when i ran the shipyard, i cut loose all the ships

Finish Line 07:16
can i park my armor here ? will you pass me the baton ? take it off and disappear and i really start to run promise me a honeybee i can smell the early pine a crooked black skeleton key when you cross the finish line oh...when you cross the finish line wrap your feet in spiderwebs they are watching from the stands i'll meet you where the highway ends as the pipe slips through your hands promise me a honeybee i can smell the early pine a crooked black skeleton key when you cross the finish line oh...when you cross the finish line now your name is miracle when you trip on your bad leg only one more bend to go hang your coat up on its peg promise me a honeybee i can smell the early pine a crooked black skeleton key when you cross the finish line oh...when you cross the finish line

about

"These songs were written over a rainy summer weekend at Jeff's shack in Maine. We approached writing together using various methods--trading chords and lines of lyrics back and forth, writing simultaneously in notebooks and then showing each other what we'd written...really fun...
We recorded with Spencer Chakedis at his Balloon Heaven studio in New York."
